Commdex Awarded Engineering Design Subcontract from HDR Inc. for the National Park Service
Atlanta, GA, April 24th, 2014 – Commdex, a leading systems integration and engineering firm, has been awarded a task order from HDR Inc. to provide communications engineering services for the National Park Service (NPS). Work is underway at the Gateway National Recreation Area (GATE), where NPS manages 21,680 acres of land and waters, across more than 40 square miles of New York and New Jersey. GATE also provides law enforcement, fire, search & rescue, and emergency management services to 2.3 million visitors each year. GATE’s telecommunications infrastructure was heavily affected when Hurricane Sandy ravaged the area in 2012, making restoration a top priority in order to ensure critical communications for day-to-day park operations, emergencies, and law enforcement use.
During the initial portion of the project, which is expected to reach its completion at the end of 2014, Commdex will deliver a complete engineering design solution for a unified, consolidated communications system for public, administrative, and support facilities throughout GATE. This restored telecommunication system will integrate both NPS and US Park Police communications systems, as well as other emergency and normal functional areas of the park’s operations.
Under this contract, Commdex will complete a dispatch center study to provide the NPS with recommendations on how to optimize its telecommunication, radio, and data communication systems. This critical effort will include site visit surveys to collect user requirements, capturing an inventory of existing communications and dispatch systems, to develop an engineering design and implementation plan for each communications system and dispatch center. Commdex’s final schematic system design will lead to the repair and replacement of GATE’s storm damaged telecommunication systems to restore the mission critical assets to pre-storm conditions.
“We are proud to partner with HDR and the National Park Service to provide engineering design and technical expertise for this crucial effort to restore reliable communications at Gateway,” Commdex President, Prince Niyyar, said. “The new and enhanced communications system will be designed with the resiliency to ensure that it works at the highest level, both in daily operations and especially during major catastrophic events, so that people are connected when it matters most.”
